I had an interesting conversation recently with a friend in which we discussed if ‘resolutions’ and ‘goals’ were the same thing. While we didn’t have the same conclusion, I prefer creating goals. At least goals need a smart action plan—whereas resolutions sort of seem like good intentions that may or may not happen. Am I more of a realist than I thought? I think I’m turning into one. 😉
The past few years, I’ve chosen a word to focus on as my motto. Last year, it was ‘courage’ and two years ago it was ‘joy.’
My word for 2017 is ‘consistency’. This isn’t a punchy word like ‘open’ or ‘fearless’. Instead the syllables break up the word into four parts that sort of bounce against each other in a rhythmic way. But this fits the concept. Consistency is repeated acts of the same or similar process to achieve a desired outcome as a whole.
Faithfulness is at the heart of consistency. The words might seem very similar, but faithfulness doesn’t imply as much of a daily action as consistency, so I chose that word to remind me of the daily action needed. I want my life to be consistent in ways that matter. Consistency is needed to make all the work I put in last year worth the effort!
So, what are some of my goals for 2017?
Journal more often and celebrate ‘wins’ more
I’ve journaled off and on throughout the last ten years. When I go back and read through my entries, I’ve noticed a common strand: that I rush past good things are happening and instead focusing on potential problems that might happen.
While on errands during the holidays, my Mom and I were having a conversation that was quickly turning stressful. All the sudden, she looked me straight in the eye and said–“you need to lighten up.” We were stopped at an intersection and she opened both our windows, turned the radio up, and started singing the cheesy random song playing. It was hilarious, joy-filled moment. And a good reminder that it’s okay to live in the moment sometimes. I want more of those in 2017. :)
Cultivate special memories with my siblings
I had an eye-opening chat recently with one of my siblings about some of the things she’d like to do with me—so we’re going to do some of those in 2017. I already have a lot of great memories with my siblings, but since they are in different stages, making memories can look like anything from making cookies together to working on a longer project together.
Buy a new camera in January
I want to pull out my camera daily to photograph our family + life and continue to hone my skills. It’s just a matter of remembering to leave it out so I use it!
Spend my time on social media very intentionally
When I looked at the ways my time could have been better spent in 2016, this was definitely an area that needed improvement. I want to use social media to cultivate meaningful relationships. And I do need to use it for my business–but that’s where the time spent gets kinda fuzzy. So, it needs some extra intentionality in 2017 .
Work with 8+ clients
I worked with a total of 12 clients last year and anticipate working with around the same number this year—maybe a little less because my prices have increased and the scope of my services have changed.
Stay consistent with my newsletter/blogging
Make 2x what I made in 2016
This is a fairly reasonable number, but it is going to take some work to get there. Money is a tool to be used wisely and I hope that God can used this business to not only provide for me, but become a way through which other people can be blessed.
Hire a part-time assistant
When this thought first crossed my mind it seem ludicrous for the amount of money I was making. But at this point I’m already throwing a lot of time into the running/outreach/pr side of the business, instead of just doing design. It’s become clear to me that investing in some help might be a really smart choice. It would be really great to have someone to hand certain tasks off to so that I can maximize my efforts and focus on the harder stuff.
Launch a new website
What?! YES! Truthfully, this was a bit overdue. I’m about halfway through designing it and am putting together a launch strategy because there are so many thing that need to happen first. More details soon! 😀 (This was Project X in my December goals list.)
Create a few passive income products
Diversifying the income I make here is important to me. There’s one thing already in the works and more to come!
I’m beginning to realize just how much of life revolves around good management of these three things:
1) relationships with people & God
This year, I want to practice being a good steward of all three.
So. There you have it. My goals for 2017! If you wrote a blog post about yours (and I know some of you reading this probably did!) then drop the link in the comments so I can read it!
